In the mid-1970s, the aluminum strips on the second series of the E646 and E645 began to come loose, which in some cases led to water ingress and body damage. In response, a new paint scheme was introduced, where the dark band that was originally between the decorative strips extended over the front and headlights, but without the raised marking under the FS frieze. From the mid-1980s, the E645 also received "Triplex" front windows, whose aluminum frames stood out more against the brown of the paint.
