The locomotive 18 201 was rebuilt in 1961 based on the 61 002, a
former Henschel streamlined locomotive, by the Experimental and
Development Department of Machine Engineering Halle. The aim was to
create a powerful express locomotive for use on high-speed routes.
From 1987 onwards, it was often used with an additional tender to
increase its range for long-distance journeys. The additional
tender, a converted standard tender, is still used today during
special trips of the locomotive.
