To ensure the operation of the new Talgo-III trains and to expand
the Talgo network to additional provincial capitals, RENFE decided
to procure its own series of diesel locomotives. Together with
TALGO, the choice fell on the German locomotive V 200 of the DB.
Krauss-Maffei adapted its dimensions and technology to the smaller
Spanish loading gauge as well as to the low height of the Talgo
trains. Among other things, the steam boiler for train heating was
omitted.
The result was a very powerful, fast, and agile locomotive with
2,000 HP that met RENFE's requirements. Ten locomotives were
ordered: five built by Krauss-Maffei in Germany and five by Babcock
& Wilcox in Sestao.
The official presentation took place on June 5, 1964, at the Talgo
workshops in Aravaca. On June 21, 1964, a Talgo-III train with the
locomotive 2006-T "Virgen Santa María" completed its first
demonstration run between Madrid and Guadalajara. After test runs,
commercial operations began on August 14, 1964, between Madrid and
Barcelona. On November 15, 1964, the Talgo III with locomotives of
the series 2000 T replaced the Talgo II on the route
Madrid–Hendaye. From 1965 onwards, all locomotives of this series
were in regular service.
