The Ferrobuses of Series 591 shaped Spanish local and regional transport for years and were used nationwide due to the low electrification of lines. With 300 horsepower and a maximum speed of 90 km/h, they represented an important modernization step for the RENFE fleet in the 1960s, often replacing very old vehicles. Although the series was retired in 1988, the newly established U.N. de Regionales later refurbished, redesigned, and reintroduced two two-part units of the subclass 500.
