The E.444 005, also known as the "electronic turtle," was a prototype for FS and left the works in Vado Ligure in September 1975 as the last "Tartaruga." As a "Full-Chopper," it was equipped with a fully electronic drive, which was a novelty for FS and offered advantages in power control, adhesion utilization, and tractive effort.
With a continuous power output of 5,050 kW and higher tractive effort than the series locomotives, it was the most powerful E.444 and was easily recognizable by numerous ventilation grilles and roof structures. After successful test runs, it was taken into service in 1976 and stationed in Milan Centrale, primarily used in traffic between Chiasso and Domodossola. Decommissioned in 1981, it was rebuilt in 1989 in accordance with the locomotives of the 2nd series.
