The MGB has awarded the contract for the renewal of nine of its
originally 13 cogwheel locomotives HGe 4/4 II built between
1986-1990 to SBB following a tender. The prototype was the HGe 4/4
II 106. It was completely stripped down and reusable parts were
overhauled. The so-called refit includes the replacement of the
main components. Visibly, in addition to the slightly altered
design and the LED headlights, the modern air conditioning unit
between the bogies is particularly noticeable. After the completion
of the work in 2021 and a successful performance test, two
locomotives were each added to the refit program. This includes, in
addition to the eight locomotives 101-108 procured by FO, the HGe
4/4 1 of the BVZ as the ninth locomotive.
