The commissioning of the standard cars EW III in 1983 marked the definitive breakthrough for the "Bernina Express": not only in terms of comfort but also due to the visually highlighted color scheme of the complete red/dark brown train unit.
In 1992/93, eleven additional express train cars of the EW IV type arrived on the Graubünden narrow-gauge network: A 1273-1275, B 2491-2497, and BD 2475.
In 1995, thanks to the second train composition, the "Heidiland Bernina Express" could be included in the program from Landquart via Davos and Filisur to Tirano.
The composition usually consisted of seven cars during the summer season.
