The standard cars EW I of the Bernina Railway (RhB) were introduced in the 1960s to meet the increasing demands for passenger transport on the Bernina line. These cars are characterized by their lightweight construction and the meter gauge typical of the Bernina Railway. They offer comfortable amenities and were specifically designed for use on the spectacular route between St. Moritz and Tirano, which features extreme gradients and tight curves.
The EW I can be used in both regional and tourist traffic and have undergone several modernizations over the years, including adjustments to the interior fittings and color schemes. They continue to shape the appearance of the Bernina Railway to this day.

The factory-sold Bernina Railway cars from the 1990s are being replaced by models with new operating numbers. The new model design will be implemented without door handle bars.
