The FS Class 653 was a tender-type steam locomotive operated by the
Italian State Railways, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). The locomotives
originally came from the Austrian Südbahn (SB) as Class 109 and
were transferred to Italy after the First World War as part of
reparations. In total, the FS took over 13 locomotives, which were
assigned the numbers 653.001–653.013.
With FS, the locomotives were mainly in service in the Trieste and
Udine areas. Due to their small numbers, they remained a marginal
presence in the Italian locomotive fleet. They were withdrawn from
service between 1939 and 1940.
