Roco

Roco was founded in 1960 by Heinz Rössler in Salzburg, Austria, initially entering the manufacturing world with plastic "Minitanks" military models. By the mid-1960s, the company pivoted to the model railway market, producing highly detailed freight cars and locomotives that set new standards for European H0 (1:87) and N (1:160) scales. Roco’s breakthrough came in the 1970s when it acquired the tooling from the defunct manufacturer Röwa, allowing it to introduce museum-quality steam and electric locomotives that combined intricate plastic injection molding with robust mechanical engineering.

Over the decades, Roco became an industry leader in technical innovation, introducing groundbreaking systems such as the "ROCO LINE" track with realistic bedding and the "close-coupling" mechanism that revolutionized how trains look while in motion. In 2008, the company became part of Modelleisenbahn GmbH, and following a strategic realignment in 2019, Roco emerged as the group's primary specialist for H0 scale models, while its sister brand Fleischmann shifted focus to N scale. Today, headquartered in Bergheim, Roco is at the forefront of the digital era with its Z21 control system, continuing to produce high-fidelity European prototypes that are prized for their precision, reliability, and advanced digital features.
