With the Re 494 “EURO DuFour”, SBB Cargo is opening a new chapter in Swiss rail freight transport. The multi-system locomotive, developed by Stadler, will in future become the modern flagship of the freight fleet and will gradually replace the legendary, but now ageing, Re 420 locomotives. In September 2024, SBB Cargo initially ordered 36 locomotives from Stadler, with an option for a further 93 units. The new Bo’Bo’ locomotive is based technologically on the experience gained from the Stadler locomotive families EUROLIGHT, EURODUAL and EURO9000, but has been specifically further developed to meet the requirements of SBB Cargo and its operational needs.
