In parallel with the ES 499.1, Škoda developed the E 499.3 as a
pure DC variant. It shared the ES 499.1’s design but did not
require AC equipment, making it slightly lighter. The locomotives
were built from 1984 onwards and were primarily intended for the 3
kV DC-electrified rail network.
In 1988, the E 499.3s were redesignated Class 163. Their common
nickname is "Persing". A faster version of this locomotive, capable
of 140 km/h, was developed as Class 162. Following the division of
Czechoslovakia, the locomotives were transferred to the fleet of
the newly founded ČD, where they remain an integral part of the
electric rolling stock to this day. In daily service, Classes 162
and 163 are used to haul regional and express trains and
occasionally operate in light freight services.
