The first Eurocity to cross the former ‘Iron Curtain’ was the EC
‘Lehar’ from Vienna to Budapest, which began operating in 1988. As
early as May 1989, the EC “Franz Liszt” followed on this route,
running from Cologne via Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Linz and Vienna to
Hungary. In the years that followed, more and more new
air-conditioned coaches of the Hungarian State Railways (MAV) were
added to the train. From May 1999, DB once again provided the
rolling stock. This also saw the deployment of the Bpmbdzf 297-type
IC control cab coach, which had been delivered from 1997 onwards.
Consequently, west of Vienna, the Class 103 was replaced by the
Class 101. On the eastern section, the train was regularly hauled
by an ÖBB Class 1014 locomotive.
As the modernisation of 20 DB dining coaches in Italy was delayed,
the WRmh 132 coaches then in service were still in use. From 1996,
the coaches received a fresh new livery, as DB AG replaced the
‘product colours’ of the Bundesbahn – which were only 10 years old
– and pushed ahead with the colour change at great speed. DB
long-distance coaches were given a light grey livery with a
traffic-red window band instead of the rapidly fading Orient red,
whilst the commuter locomotives and coaches were uniformly painted
in traffic red.
