The V 100 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, often referred to as the "V
100 Ost", was one of the most important diesel locomotives in the
medium-power range of the former GDR. It was developed from the
early 1960s onwards to gradually replace older steam locomotives in
passenger and freight services.
In total, over 1,100 locomotives of this class were built between
1966 and 1985 at the VEB Lokomotivbau "Karl Marx" in Babelsberg.
Each production series differed in specific details. For example,
the bonnets and their roofs on the first locomotives (V100 003–043)
were designed differently from those on later-series locomotives.
