60 shunting locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, testing of the
first two prototype locomotives began in 1959. Before series
production could commence, a number of design modifications were
required, which were tested in a further small series of five
locomotives. Between 1962 and 1964, the first series comprising 163
locomotives was delivered to the DR by LKM Babelsberg. Whilst the
first main series was still under construction, a rain guard was
fitted above the side windows. The front sections of the front-end
structures were also slightly modified. Unlike the first
locomotives, whose front-end structures were slightly curved about
a vertical axis and thus featured protruding lamps mounted on
brackets, the new front-end structures from locomotive number V 60
1053 onwards were straight, apart from the rounded corners, and the
lamps were mounted directly on the front.
