With the V 90 diesel locomotive, the Deutsche Bundesbahn introduced
a new generation of high-performance shunting locomotives from the
mid-1960s onwards. Based on the design principles of the
tried-and-tested V 100, the V 90 was developed specifically for
heavy shunting and light mainline service. The extended locomotive
frame, significantly higher service weight and the more powerful
motor made the V 90 a robust workhorse in day-to-day operation.
The Class 290 has undergone several colour variations over the
years. The first Class 290 locomotives were still delivered in the
standard purple-red livery typical of diesel locomotives. From 1975
onwards, the colours ocean blue and beige defined the locomotives’
exterior appearance.
