Diesel locomotive 217 017 belonged to the small Class 217 of the
Deutsche Bundesbahn, with just 15 locomotives. Built by Krupp in
1968, the locomotive was part of the V-160 family and originally
featured, in addition to the traction diesel motor, a separate
heating diesel engine for supplying passenger trains. This made it
versatile for both passenger and freight traffic.
217 017 was based in Regensburg for many years and was transferred
to the Mühldorf depot in 2000. There, the locomotive – which had by
then been repainted in traffic red – was used primarily for freight
traffic. In 2008, it underwent a simplified major overhaul. During
this overhaul, the heating diesel motor, which was no longer
required, was removed and replaced with ballast.
As one of the last remaining locomotives of its class, 217 017
remained in service with DB Schenker Rail until the end of 2011 and
was the last operational 217 in the Deutsche Bahn fleet. In
February 2014, it was finally withdrawn from service and sold to
the Pfalzbahn.
