The Italian State Railways (FS) procured a total of 9 ALn 442/448
series diesel multiple units from the Italian manufacturer Breda
for high-quality passenger services on diesel routes. Until 1972,
they were predominantly used to replace locomotive-hauled TEE
trains. Meals and drinks were prepared in a specially fitted
on-board galley and, as there was no restaurant area, were served
directly to passengers at their seats. After their service as TEE
trains, the trains were converted: the kitchen was removed, and
seats were fitted in its place, which is why the designation was
changed to ALn 448/460. The ALn trains were particularly popular
with passengers for their high level of comfort and short journey
times (the multiple units could reach speeds of 140 km/h).
