Despite all efforts to switch to railcars, DB Regio urgently
required modern, high-speed electric locomotives to haul
double-deck trains on local services at speeds of up to 160 km/h.
As a result, Bombardier was commissioned to develop a special
version of the Class 145 for local services, which was classified
as Class 146. The main differences compared with the Class 145 are
the hollow-shaft drive approved for speeds of up to 160 km/h,
instead of the nose-suspended drive, and the highly visible
destination display. A total of 31 locomotives were delivered to DB
Regio between 2001 and 2002. Two further production series followed
later.
