In the 1950s, Waggonbau Bautzen built a short goods train luggage
van for the DR. More than 200 vans were procured in two production
series. A distinctive feature of these vans was their built-in rear
signals, whose red-and-white surfaces could be covered by rotating
shutters.
From 1964 onwards, the luggage vans were also used on branch lines
in passenger trains. These coaches were lettered according to the
passenger coach classification scheme, with the designation “D”.
