The Class 2143 locomotives were built between 1964 and 1977 and
operated on non-electrified main and branch lines, particularly in
eastern Austria. They hauled both passenger and goods trains. A
total of 77 locomotives were delivered to the ÖBB by
Simmering-Graz-Pauker-Werke.
A large proportion of the Class 2143 fleet comprised the third
production series, which was itself subdivided within this class.
The so-called Series 3a comprised running numbers 2143.34–43,
whilst Series 3b comprised 2143.44–70. All locomotives in the third
series share certain common features: the frame is straight, unlike
in the earlier series, and is not cranked downwards. The areas
around the driver’s cab doors featured long rain gutters, and the
door windows were framed in metal. The fuel filler areas were also
designed with different dimensions.
