Class 24 was designated in the standard locomotive type catalogue
as a passenger train tender locomotive of the 1’ C h2 type with a
15 t axle load for service on branch lines. It was intended to be
largely identical in construction to its ‘tender locomotive
version’, Class 64. The two-cylinder superheated steam engine
delivered 920 PSi. The locomotives, with a driving wheel diameter
of 1,500 mm, were approved for a maximum speed of 90 km/h, allowing
flexible deployment in passenger train service, including on main
lines.
After the Second World War, 47 locomotives remained in the Western
zones. At the DB, 42 locomotives were returned to service; some
were fitted with Witte smoke deflectors and remained in use until
1967.
