With the "Bosporus-Package", selected locomotives of the ÖBB Class
1116 have been specifically equipped for extended operation in
South-Eastern Europe. This equipment package enables through
services from Austria to the Balkan corridor area and onwards to
Turkey – an important step for international freight transport
along the so-called “Bosphorus axis”.
The Taurus locomotives adapted in this way are fitted with
additional national train protection and signalling systems, as
well as technical modifications that allow multi-system operation
across several South-Eastern European countries. These include
Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, among others, enabling
long-distance transport corridors to be operated efficiently
without the need for locomotive changes en route.
