The ES 499.1 electric locomotive is one of the best-known vehicles
of the Czechoslovak State Railways. Developed and built by Škoda in
Plzeň, these locomotives were technically among the most modern in
Europe at the time. As the world’s first multi-system electric
locomotives, they featured thyristor pulse control, which enabled
infinitely variable and particularly sensitive power control.
A distinctive feature of the Czechoslovak railway network was the
use of two power supply systems: 3 kV direct current and 25 kV 50
Hz alternating current. To enable trains to run continuously
without changing locomotives, Škoda developed the dual-system
electric locomotive ES 499.1. The first prototypes were built in
1980 and 1981, with series production beginning in 1984.
The four-axle locomotive, with a Bo’Bo’ wheel arrangement, was 16.8
metres long and weighed around 87 tonnes. Four traction motors
delivered about 3,480 kW under direct current and about 3,060 kW
under alternating current. The maximum speed was 120 km/h. A modern
thyristor control system enabled precise power regulation, making
the locomotive suitable for both passenger and freight trains.
