Historical context
Since December 2020, the Akiem locomotives 186 901 – 910 have been
leased to SBB Cargo International and are predominantly used in
RoLa (Rollende Landstrasse, or rolling highway) transport between
Freiburg and Novara. The “Katzenberg” locomotive specifically
carries the Ralpin AG lettering on one side and features a revised
Alppiercer design on the other, symbolizing its service through the
Katzenberg tunnel. This tunnel, part of the Basel - Karlsruhe
expansion project initiated in 2012, represents one of the many
vital tunnel constructions along the North-South corridor used by
SBB Cargo International and RAlpin AG. The inclusion of the
tunnel’s south portal design on the locomotive underlines its
significance in facilitating major European trade routes.
