The modern class 23 of the German Federal Railway "outlived" the
Prussian P 8 - which was intended as its replacement - by only one
year. Its output was 1,314 kW, and it weighed 131.8 t. Its maximum
speed in forwards motion was 110 km/h, and 85 km/h when moving
tender first. On 31.12.1971, 76 engines were in the maintenance
fleet and exclusively stationed in three railway depots
(Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern and Crailsheim). After their official
withdrawal from service in December 1975, 8 of these locomotives
were retained for posterity, in part still operational, in various
associations and museums.
