Once the major railway lines had largely been completed and the
benefits to the developed economic regions became apparent, it soon
became clear that more remote areas were being left behind. In
response, efforts were made to open up these regions through the
construction of "secondary railways". These simpler branch lines
connected countless small towns and villages to the wider railway
network, bringing them access to the outside world.
