Like the 'Taurus' locomotives, the Class 2016 was also given a
classical name—'Hercules'—in reference to the hero of Greek
mythology known for his superhuman strength.
Between 2002 and 2004, a total of 100 diesel-electric universal
locomotives were put into service by the ÖBB. The locomotive
supports both multiple traction and push-pull operations. With an
engine output of 2,000 kW and a top speed of 140 km/h, it is
suitable for mainline service. Thanks to its 20-ton axle load, it
can also be deployed on branch lines.
