In the 1970s, the former Czech State Railways (ČSD) had an urgent
need for powerful diesel locomotives for medium- to heavy-duty
shunting and mainline freight services. As a result, the lighter T
466.2 variant was developed, based on the industrial locomotive
type T 448. ČKD in Prague manufactured nine series, each with
slight technical differences, producing a total of 94 units from
1977 onwards. These locomotives remained in service with the ČSD
until 1986.
