Class 217 of the German Federal Railways (DB) was a more powerful
advancement of the well-known V-160 family and was a technical
interim solution to meet a specific operational need: the use of
heavy push-pull trains with electric train heating on
non-electrified lines. Between 1965 and 1968, a total of 15
locomotives were built by Krauss-Maffei. These engines are
considered the technical precursors of the later class 218, which
was equipped with an integrated heating generator at the factory.
The locomotives were divided into so-called prototypes (217 001 –
003) and pre-series machines (217 011 – 022).
