The Deutsche Reichsbahn feared that it would have fewer and fewer
locomotives for use in its express trains due to the poor condition
of some of its class 01s. It was therefore decided to rebuild the
01s, which also meant improving performance and eliminating
technical faults, and this was particularly successful with this
class. The new welded boiler was fitted with a third safety valve.
All the boiler superstructures were clad, the cab was modernised
and the Witte smoke deflectors were chamfered at the front.
01 529 was fitted with a combustion chamber boiler, mixing
preheater and main oil firing system in 1964. Its last station and
place of service was Berlin-Schöneweide. It was taken out of
service in July 1983.
