The "Arlberg Express" was one of those trains whose introduction
dates back to the era of transcontinental luxury trains. Unlike its
siblings, the Orient and Ostend Express, it travelled through the
whole of Austria in a west-east direction.
Over time, the train became more and more of an international train
with through coaches. In addition to the Vienna – Paris train, the
train ran numerous through coaches, for instance to the
Salzkammergut region and from there to Salzburg, where these were
then removed from the train. There were also through coaches from
Vienna to Carinthia and East Tyrol, which were transported onwards
from Schwarzach-St. Veit on the Tauern Pass Railway.
Depending on the composition, the available sets can be used to
reproduce the train for the different Vienna – Salzburg –
Schwarzach St. Veit – Innsbruck – Buchs lines.
