BLS Cargo was the only Swiss company to order ten Traxx F140 MS2e
locomotives in September 2007, with the delivery option of an
additional ten locomotives. However, the option was never
exercised. Although the new Rothrist – Mattstetten line and the
Lötschberg base tunnel were completed and ETCS equipment was
mandatory at the time of delivery, the Re 486s were still in
operation without it. The retrofitting took place at a later date.
The locomotives were registered in Switzerland, which is why they
have designation Re 486 with locomotive numbers 486 501 to 510. The
locomotives are designed for traffic over the Alps and are equipped
for Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy. The 486 501 is the
only locomotive in its class to bear the coat of arms with the town
name Beura Cardezza. The new design with the alpinist above a
crevasse was first seen on the 486 510 in spring of 2022, after
which the remaining locomotives were also redesigned.
