The progressive electrification of the DR railway network made it
necessary to develop a four-axle electric locomotive in the early
1980s. Class 243 is a universal electric locomotive of the railway
company of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Reichsbahn, DR)
that was created from trial locomotive 212 001-2 and is used in all
areas of train operation. The DR procured over 600 of them.
When the East German and West German state railways merged, class
243 locomotives were transferred to the DB AG fleet. There they
were incorporated as class 143.
