From 1976 to 1995, 217 examples of the class 1044 four-axle
thyristor locomotives were procured by the ÖBB. The 5,120 kW
locomotives, which could run at speeds of up to 160 km/h, shaped
the modern image of the ÖBB for many years. From 2002 onwards, most
1044 locomotives were equipped for push-pull operation. This made
the engines, now re-designated 1144, even more versatile.
