For use in the French direct current network with 1.5 kV, the SNCF
purchased the powerful mixed-traffic locomotives BB 9200 starting
in 1957. By 1964, 92 locomotives were built by the companies
Creusot-Loire, Jeumont-Schneider, and CEM. From the beginning, the
machines were used to haul high-quality passenger trains from Paris
station Austerlitz to Bordeaux and Toulouse. Soon, their mission
was extended to the entire southern DC network of the SNCF. The
locos were also used for the carriage of fast goods trains. They
reached a top speed of 160 km/h and had a power output of 3850 kW.
