Passenger cars "Touristen-Express":
In 1956, the travel agency of the GDR introduced a sleeper train on the route from Dresden to Varna on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. At the initiative of the FDJ, from 1961 onwards, the sleeper and couchette train "Touristenexpress" (abbreviated "TOUREX") was created and used as a special train by the travel agency starting in the summer of 1963. The "TOUREX" consisted of sleeping, dining, and several special cars, which were initially painted in a blue color scheme with the italic inscription "Touristenexpress." However, over time, more and more red-painted cars from Mitropa were used. From the 1970s onwards, the "TOUREX" also included car transport vehicles of the DDm type. The train route started in Dresden-Neustadt and went through Bad Schandau, Decin, Olomouc (or Brno), Sturovo, Szob, Budapest, Szolnok, Biharkeresztes, Episkopia Bihor, Cluj, Brasov, Bucharest, Giurgiu Nord, and Ruse (or Negru Voda and Kardam) to Varna.

Usually, the journey was made without scheduled stops. However, for city trips, there were also day stops in Budapest or other locations along the route. The turning point in 1989 marked the end for the Touristenexpress, as it became known that there were now other destinations for GDR citizens besides the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
