1962

The DB Class V 10020, later designated as Class 212, serves as a more powerful variant of the original V 10010 series. Its development is rooted in the prototype V 100 006, which was renumbered to V 100 2001 in 1960. Series production of the Class 212 commenced in 1962, marking a distinct evolution from the V 10010 model, as this variant is designed not only for branch line service but also for main line duties and handling steeper gradients. By 1966, a total of 381 units had been produced and entered active service.

The physical dimensions of the Class 212 locomotive include a length of 12.1 meters for the first units, increasing to 12.3 meters from unit number 022. It has a total weight of 63 tonnes, enabling it to effectively perform its intended operational roles. The locomotive achieves a maximum speed of 100 km/h and is powered by an engine that delivers an output of 993 kW, equivalent to 1,350 PS.

In addition to the standard models, 10x locomotives from the final batch of 150 units are outfitted with enhanced braking systems and modified drives, specifically designed for operations on steep gradients. These units are originally numbered V 100 2332 to 2341 and underwent a reclassification in 1968, becoming known as DB Class 213.

The Class 212 locomotives continued to operate in various capacities until the last unit was withdrawn from regular service in 2004. Despite this, several examples have been preserved or repurposed by private firms, ensuring that a part of their operational legacy continues beyond their active years.
