With the electrification of the Mulhouse - Basel line with 25 kV 25 Hz, a two-frequency station was built in Basel. In order to be able to carry out the manoeuvre with electric locomotives, the SBB ordered six locomotives compatible with both the Swiss and the French system.

1957

In 1957 SLM and BBC supplied the Ee 3/3 II 16501 and 16502. The same year SLM and MFO supplied the Ee 3/3 II 16503 and 16504.

SLM and SAAS supplied the Ee 3/3 II 16505 and 16506 (the SAAS locomotives were used as models for the nine SNCF locomotives C 20151 to C 20159).
