Between 1957 and 1958, a pilot series of seven units is built by Robert Aebi AG - RACO (factory designation 60 LA 7) and by the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik - SLM.

These units are registered as Tm 301 - 306 and Tm 896.

The series production starts in 1960 and the locomotives are registered as Tm^I.

During the 1970s, units 404 - 406 will receive new registration numbers 893 - 895.
