1919

Following the end of World War I, the Romanian Railways receive as war compensation 30x steam locomotives previously registered as G 8.1 with the Prussian State Railway (P.St.B.).

6x additional units join the Romanian Railways fleet of steam locomotives shorty after, but it is unclear if these units are also received or if they are acquired due to the lack of official documentation.

These 36x units will be registered as Class 40.001 - 036.

These are not the first D-h2 type steam locomotives owned by the Romanian Railways. In 1914, 6x steam locomotives registered as Series 1531 - 1536 are delivered as new from the Hanomag factory in Germany.

1921

76x new steam locomotives are delivered between 1921 and 1922 as following:
- Hohenzollern Locomotive Works deliver 10x units (registered as 40.037 - 046) in 1921;
- Linke-Hofmann Works deliver 10x units (registered as 40.047 - 056) in 1921 and 6x units (registered as 40.107 - 112) in 1922;
- Orenstein & Koppel deliver 50x units (registered as 40.057 - 106) in 1921.

The steam locomotives are equipped with:
- Westinghouse or Knorr automatic braking systems;
- installation for burning fuel oil with Cosmovici type sprayer;
- Friedmann type water injectors and lubricating pump;
- Ramsbottom safety valves;
- oil lighting;
- pneumatically operated sanding.

The locomotives are delivered with a 3-axles tender capable of carrying 16.5 m³ of water, 4.5 m³ of fuel oil and 3.4 t of coal. These are equipped with CFR type grease cans. The tenders for the last 10x units delivered by Orenstein & Koppel (units 40.097 - 106) are factory equipped with Cosmovici axle boxes.

NB: During their lifetime, some units are coupled with tenders from other series, like for example unit 40.065 being coupled with tender number 5182, unit 40.051 with tender number 4877, 40.005 with tender 50.301, 40.032 with tender 50.174, 40.045 with tender 50.531, 40.049 with tender 50.301, 40.067 with tender 50.819, 40.069 with tender 50.282 and 40.082 with tender 50.213.

Most of these steam locomotives are delivered painted in black, with the chassis and spoke wheels painted in red, but some units are delivered in a green livery.

The units from this series are mainly used for freight services and, despite the very low maximum speed (55 km/h), to pull some local passenger services.

1929

Between 1929 and 1930, the Romanian Railways rent at least 30x additional steam locomotives of this type from Deutsche Reichsbahn where they are now classified as Class 55.

1953

November 1

By November 1st, 1953, the following units are removed from regular service: 40.020, 40.052, 40.064, 40.083, 40.095 & 40.103.

1970s

In the early 70's, the steam locomotives from this series are found in 4 large depots (Bucharest, Ploiesti, Constanta and Galati) where they are used for shunting and very rarely for local freight services.

1981

The last steam locomotive from this series, unit 40.098, is removed from regular service in December 1981.

Most of the locomotives are scrapped between 1979 and 1987, with units 40.001 and 40.068 preserved as historical units.
