1987

As there were increasing problems with the AM APT35 units, replacement became more and more urgent.

After many discussions regarding the future of mail transport (would it be best served by rail or by truck?), the Belgian postal services and NMBS finally signed a new ten-year contract in 1987.

In 1988, 15x AM 54 units were converted for mail transport and put into service as AM APT54 961 to 975:
- AM54 109 -> AM APT54 963
- AM54 080 -> AM APT54 961
- AM54 085 -> AM APT54 962
- AM54 086 -> AM APT54 964
- AM54 117 -> AM APT54 965
- AM54 123 -> AM APT54 966
- AM54 118 -> AM APT54 967
- AM54 074 -> AM APT54 968
- AM54 091 -> AM APT54 669
- AM54 093 -> AM APT54 970
- AM54 128 -> AM APT54 971
- AM54 084 -> AM APT54 972
- AM54 120 -> AM APT54 973
- AM54 110 -> AM APT54 974
- AM54 112 -> AM APT54 975

2003

In 2003, the cooperation between NMBS and the Belgian postal services stopped as mail transport was taken over by trucks and AM APT54 units were removed from service.

2004

Units 961, 965 and 969 are acquired by Tuscan Rail Transport (TFT) and are registered as ALe + Le 054.
