1972

The 220x units from this series are built between 1972 and 1978.

Each coach comprises 11x 2nd class compartments with 6x seats each (1x compartment less compared with previous Bm 22-70 000 - 099 coaches to give the passengers more space). The doorways are provided with folding steps.

Originally, they are painted SBB green except units 090 to 109 and 150 to 169 delivered in "Eurofima" livery: orange with a grey stripe.

1983

Units 003 and 088 are destroyed during a fire in Rome in 1983.

1988

Unit 000 is rebuilt in 1988 as 51 85 21-70 300: the compartments are removed and the interior is converted to an open saloon.

The same year, units 068, 098 and 213 are destroyed during a fire in Verbania.

1989

Unit 154 is destroyed during an accident in Bregenz in 1989.

1990

Unit 118 is destroyed in an accident in Prague in 1990.

1991

Between 1991 and 1997, 211x units are converted to Bpm 21-70 301 - 511 passenger coaches.

Also, unit Bm 51 85 21-70 005-5 is converted to SRm 51 85 89-70 550-9 in 1991.
