At the beginning of the 1960s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) organised a survey for
travellers preferences and it appeared that about 3/4 preferred
compartment coaches while 1/4 preferred salon coaches. Following
this survey, the first prototypes revealed 2-seater and 4-seater
compartment coaches designed for the Rheingold and Rheinpfeil
trains. But the Dutch and Swiss railway companies (countries
concerned by the Rheingold and Rheinpfeil services) rejected the
idea as they believed the number of seats in each coach was too
small. As a compromis, the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) developed a 9x
6-seater compartment coach.

The first 10x units are built in 1962 by WMD in Donauwörth for the
Rheingold service.
Each compartment coach has 9 compartments with 6 seats each (54
seats in total) compared with previously 1st class coaches that
used to have 10 compartments. The compartments are separated from
the corridor by sliding doors and separation walls equipped with
large windows. Each compartment is equipped with ceiling lighting
and individual adjustable reading lights above each seat. The seats
are all individually adjustable. Because the compartments are 2,322
meter wide there is plenty of legroom. The windows are 1,40 m
wide.
These coaches were painted in a blue/ivory white colours and were
recognisable by their rounded roofs.

As the Rheingold and Rheinpfeil services receive TEE status in
1965, the coaches initially built for these services receive the
TEE bordeaux red/ivory white colours between 1966 and 1967. These
coaches started also to be used on other TEE connexions and often
during this 2 years period there were TEE trains with mixed
compositions of coaches in both blue/ivory white colours and
bordeaux red/ivory white colours.
