1939

The SBB CFF FFS ordered 2 diesel locomotives of the Am 4/4 type intended for passenger passenger trains.

The first Am 4/4 was shown at the "Landesausstelling" exhibition in Zurich in 1939.

The locomotives were very innovative for the time. The mechanical part comes from the Swiss Lokomotiv- and Maschinenfabrik in Winterthur, where the locomotives were also assembled. The electrical part was supplied by Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC) and the diesel engine by Sulzer AG.

The Am 4/4 had a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

1962

In 1962 it was decided to adjust the locomotives so that they had more pulling power. A cooling system was installed for the traction motors so that they could not overheat at low speeds. The maximum speed of the locomotives was reduced to a maximum speed of 75 km/h by adjusting the traction. After the conversion, the locomotives were classified as Bm 4/4 II.

Between 1962-1963, the 1st locomotive was converted at the SBB CFF FFS workshops in Zürich, followed by the 2nd locomotive between 1963-1964.
