Re 4/4II: other technical drawings

1964

The 6x Re 4/4II prototypes are built in 1964 by Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM), Brown, Boveri & Compagnie (BBC), Oerlikon Machine Factory (MFO) and Sécheron Workshops (SAAS).

These units are registered 11201 to 11206.

These locomotives have only one pantograph, originally a scissor pantograph replaced later on by a single-arm pantograph on some units.

1967

The production series starts in 1967 and in the first batch 49x units are delivered, registered Re 4/4II 11107 - 11155.

The 6x prototypes are renumbered from 11201 - 11206 to 11101 - 11106 the same year.

1967

Following the delivery of the prototypes in 1964 (initially registered Re 4/4II 11201 - 11206), the production series started in 1967.

50x locomotives are built and delivered during the first batch:
- 49x units are delivered to the Swiss Federal Railways - SBB CFF FFS and are registered Re 4/4II 11107 - 11155;
- 1x unit is delivered to the Swiss Southeastern Railway - SOB and, as it is equipped with a different mechanical transmission (providing a lower top speed and higher traction), is registered Re 4/4III 41.

These units are very similar to the prototypes, except they are 10 cm bigger in length.

1969

From 1969, the locomotives delivered starting with the second batch are half a meter longer compared with the units delivered during the first batch and have two pantographs.

They are registered from Re 4/4II 11156.

1969

Compared with units Re 4/4II 11107 - 11155 delivered during the first batch, the locomotives delivered from the second batch onwards are half a meter longer and have two pantographs.

Units Re 4/4II 11156 - 11254 (representing 60x units ordered during a second batch and 39x units ordered during a third batch) are delivered between 1969 and 1973.

NB: The third batch also included 20x locomotives configured for higher traction and lower speed, registered Re 4/4III 11351 - 11370.

1970

The 4th batch (50x units) is ordered in 1970 and the locomotives, delivered from 1973, are registered Re 4/4II 11255 - 11304.

Units 11103 & 11106 are converted for the Swiss Express service and will continue to be registered as Re 4/4II 11103 & 11106.

1975

Units 11108, 11109, 11112, 11113, 11133 & 11141 are converted for the Swiss Express service and will continue to be registered as Re 4/4II 11108, 11109, 11112, 11113, 11133 & 11141.

1979

The 5th batch (45x units) is ordered in 1979 and the locomotives, registered Re 4/4II 11305 - 11349, are delivered by 1983.

1981

The 6th and last batch of locomotives, consisting of 27x units, is ordered in 1981. The locomotives are registered Re 4/4II 11371 - 11397 and are delivered between 1984 and 1985.

The units from this final order are the only ones to feature rectangular halogen headlights straight from the factory, whereas all other Re 4/4II and Re 4/4III electric locomotives (as well as the Re 6/6 electric locomotives) were only equipped with low-range round headlights. Subsequently, all Re 4/4II and Re 4/4III are fitted with halogen headlights.

Other difference compared with the previous units: the 27x electric locomotives from this series are built with solid wheels instead of the bandaged wheels of earlier series.

Units Re 4/4II 11377 - 11397 also receive the red livery already at delivery (the first 6x units, Re 4/4II 11371 - 11376, are delivered with the green livery).

1999

From 1999, 26x units from this series (units 11371 - 11397, with the exception of unit 11382 destroyed in a fire in 2002) are equipped for use on German and Austrian railways by SBB Cargo (SBBC) and receive new registration Re 421.
