In the 1920s, the SBB CFF FFS needed more powerful universal locomotives. After the good experience with the Buchli drive, the SBB ordered two prototypes of the Ae 4/7 in 1925. By 1934, a total of 127 Ae 4/7 had been delivered to SBB CFF FFS. The successful and sturdy locomotives were used until 1996 when the last scheduled missions took place. Some Ae 4/4 are today preserved in museums and are partly operational.
