TEE 56 Bavaria accident in Aitrang (1971)

On the evening of the 9th of February 1971, the TEE 56 Bavaria was approaching Aitrang at approximately 6:30pm, headed for Zürich. That evening the route was served by RAm TEEI 501 of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). Entering the right-hand part of a large S-turn, the 229 metric ton train derailed at 124 km/h. A nearing VT 98 railbus that was headed for Aitrang coming from Kempten, spotted the wrecked TEE too late and, despite attempting to stop, struck the wreckage at 40 km/h.
