In order to replace the old steam-powered snow blower, the ÖBB
started to operate self-propelled snow blowers in the period
between 1975 and 1982. The snow blowers were produced by the
Bavarian company "Beilhack" and then delivered to Austria. The
advantage of the Beilhack snow blowers was easier handling. So no
additional traction unit is needed for the operation. Another big
advantage is that the snow blower can automatically change
direction, since the complete vehicle platform can be turned 180
degrees. The snow blowers were used all over Austria, today as in
the past, however, Carinthia, Salzburg, and Tyrol were considered
the main operation regions.
