The diesel locomotive class, nicknamed 'Babelsbergerin' after its
place of origin, was produced in series from 1962 by Lokomotivbau
'Karl Marx'. The new B'B'-configured Class V 180 derived its
designation from its powerplant: two motors, each delivering 900
hp. The locomotives had a centrally mounted boiler for universal
use, including in front of passenger trains. The maximum speed was
120 km/h, which was sufficient on the GDR's main lines; only very
few lines were designed for higher speeds. From 1970 onward, the V
180s were designated as Class 118 and saw widespread service across
the entire territory of the GDR.
